About Us
Coalition for Refugees from Burma promotes self-sufficiency
of all resettled refugees from Burma, by helping them access services and educational
opportunities while preserving traditional customs.
CRB uses a novel approach by focusing on developing capacity of individuals and strengthening capacity of community in areas of knowledge capital. Our programs build upon existing assets and wisdom of refugee staff by providing community-based system of training.
In partnership with experts from local service providers, CRB offers wide ranging educational workshops for refugees such as Domestic Violence Awareness, Legal 101, College Preparation, Parenting in America, and Family Planning. CRB invests in the youth; providing leadership training and multi-media workshops in the summer.
CRB also reaches out to social service providers to ensure that refugees from Burma get access to services; in June 2010, CRB offered a cultural orientation workshop “Burma 101” for 66 service providers who work with refugees from Burma. CRB participated in community building events such as organizing and running the Annual Refugee Picnic and the Karenni and Karen New Year’s celebrations; Refugee Youth and Elder Field Trips; Civic Engagement activities such as participation in Seattle Mayor McGinn’s Youth and Families Initiative program; and organizing multi-faith refugees to march at the Seeds of Compassion event featuring Dalai Lama.
